The Oldsmobile was founded in 1897 by Ransom E. Olds. Over the 107 years
Oldsmobile has been around, there have been 35.2 million cars produced. At the time
Oldsmobiles were phased out in 2004, it was the oldest surviving American automobile.
The 1901 to 1904 Oldsmobile Curved Dash was the first mass-produced car made from the first
automotive assembly line. (This invention is often miscredited to the Ford Motor Company
but Ford was the first to manufacture cars on a moving assembly line.)
In 1940, Oldsmobile was the first auto maker to offer a fully automatic transmission, called the
Hydramatic. It had a gas pedal and a brake — no clutch pedal. What a delight!
